Sleep rhythm disorders are characterized by an abnormal pattern of sleep. Several causes can lead to an altered sleep-wake cycle. Some of the major factors can be triggered by the environment.
Factors
For instance, shift workers have been found to experience confusional arousals. This disorder is caused by disruptions with the body's internal clock. It is associated with emotional stress, involuntary limb movements, and chronic insomnia.
One study found that hypersomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, was significantly more common in shift workers than in healthy controls. Studies have also found that children with ADHD showed higher rates of parasomnia.
NREM Sleep Parasomnia
NREM sleep parasomnias are known to occur during the first few stages of sleep. They have been referred to as "transitory" sleep disorders. The majority of subjects with these disorders do not show signs of intellectual disability. However, they may continue to cause sleep disturbances as they grow older.
Treatments
Many doctors recommend a combination of treatments for these disorders. These include melatonin, chronotherapy, and light therapy. Melatonin helps to reset the body's sleep-wake rhythm. Wearing a light visor or blocking lights from electronic devices may also be helpful.
Light therapy is used to treat sleep-wake rhythm disorders. It works by synchronizing the body's functions by moving wake times later and sleep times earlier. Although it can be effective, it can have serious effects, including agitation and nausea.
