Parasomnia is a group of sleep disorders characterized by abnormal behavior during sleep. Symptoms may vary, depending on the type of disorder.
Some of the more common types of parasomnias are REM sleep behavior disorder, exploding head syndrome, and sleepwalking. The most common types of parasomnias occur in children. However, adult cases of parasomnias are also reported.
These parasomnias often affect people who have psychiatric disorders, neurological disorders, or substance abuse histories. A person who has parasomnias is at an increased risk for health problems, accidents, and other issues.
Night terrors, also called sleep terrors, are episodes of agitation and fear occurring during deep sleep. A person with night terrors might scream and cry out. They may feel their pupils get dilated and experience faster heartbeats. They might not respond to comforting. They can be dangerous to other people.
Some parasomnias are related to a neurodegenerative condition such as Parkinson's disease. These disorders can be treated by medication. A home sleep study or a polysomnogram is a common diagnostic test for sleep disorders and sleep doctor can advice if treatment by CPAP machine is needed.
Medications can help alleviate some of the symptoms of parasomnia and can also help the patient and bed partner. If the parasomnia is causing an unsafe situation for the patient or bed partner, a sleep specialist can help determine the best course of action.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends that people of all ages get at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. While some sleep disorders are common in people of all ages, those over the age of 35 are more likely to suffer from sleep-related disorders.
