Inspire Upper Airway Stimulation
Inspire upper airway stimulation therapy is an implantable device for patients with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who cannot use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. Unlike CPAP, Inspire uses mild stimulation of muscles at the back of your throat which keeps it open during sleep.
Inspire is a less costly surgical option than other treatment options for OSA. It has also been demonstrated to be safe and effective at treating sleep apnea, helping people get more rest and decreasing their risk of long-term health issues such as stroke, heart attack or diabetes.
Who Is Eligible for Inspire Therapy?
Inspire is a medical device implanted in your mouth, just behind your tongue. It consists of two components: a pressure-sensing lead and stimulating lead which sends mild pulsations to the nerve controlling your tongue. These pulsations gently move your tongue forward for better airway clearance and increased natural breathing. All operations are controlled by a handheld remote that you turn on before bed and off when you wake up.
To determine if you're eligible, consult your doctor who will perform an airway exam called Drug-Induced Sleep Endoscopy (DISE). This quick test uses a camera to examine how well your throat opens and closes during sleep. Talk to your doctor or Easmed Singapore for more details.
