Is there any relationship between sleep disorders and heart failure?
Symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, include increased heart rate and blood pressure. In addition, people who have OSA may experience longer recovery times after a heart attack or stroke, and they are at higher risk for coronary artery disease.
Heart failure is a condition in which the heart cannot pump enough blood into the body. This makes the heart work harder, which increases pressure on the heart. It causes shortness of breath. People with congestive heart failure have problems with their sleep, which can worsen their condition.
A recent study suggests that treatment for sleep disorders such as restless legs syndrome in patients with heart failure may reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. The relationship between sleep disorders and heart failure is still being studied.
Several trials have shown that sleep apnea and high blood pressure can be treated. However, there are few studies that compare CPAP with other methods of treating central sleep apnea, or CSA. There are also no conclusive randomized controlled trials on the effectiveness of treatments for CSA. Generally, CPAP machine is effective device in preventing CSA.
The problem is that many of the sleep apnea symptoms are difficult to diagnose and distinguish from other medical conditions such as heart failure. Therefore, it is important to discuss any sleep problems you are experiencing with your healthcare team or sleep doctor.
