What are REM Sleep stages? They are your brain waves and body movements associated with the rapid eye movement stage of your sleep. This is the most vivid form of dreaming and occurs in approximately 25% of all your sleep sessions.
During REM sleep, you experience an increase in brain activity, causing your eyes to move erratically and your heart rate and blood pressure to increase. This is also the time your brain forms neural connections to strengthen memory and replenish mood-boosting chemicals like serotonin.
N1: Light Sleep, Often During the First Half of Your Nightly Cycle
Generally the first stage of your night’s sleep cycle, N1 sleep involves a slight decrease in heart rate and breathing, and body temperature decreases. It is a common phase for most people to fall asleep, and it can last for up to 10 minutes or so.
N2: Deep Sleep, Often About Half Your Nighttime Hours
In stage 2 sleep, your body and brain slow down, your breathing and heart rate slow down, and your muscles relax. It is usually the last stage of your night’s sleep cycles and is a crucial phase for physical recovery, immune system health, and recoding memories the next day.
N3: Deep Sleep, Most of Your Nighttime Hours
During N3 sleep, your body and brain slow down in its preparation for deeper stages of sleep, including a decrease in temperature and a reduction of breathing and heart rate. It is considered restorative and helps your body repair and rejuvenate.
