Are you diagnosed with or suspected of having sleep apnea, and do like hitting the gym once in a while? Good news, a new study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine shows that a 12-week exercise program helps to dampen the daytime misery due to sleep apnea in 43 sedentary and overweight adults. The 12-week program involves aerobic training running on the treadmill for 40 minutes a day for 4 days a week and resistance training targeting each muscle group including shoulder chest press rows leg and bicep curls and abdominal crunches twice a week, or low-intensity stretching routine. After 12 weeks, participants improved daytime functioning, were less sleepy, less depressed, and had an overall better mood. However, further research is required on the benefits of exercise for untreated sleep apnea patients. Nonetheless, regardless of having sleep apnea or not, regular exercise has been proven to boost one energy, reduce stress, improve one’s mood, help
slow or prevent health conditions like heart disease, stroke and diabetes, and helps one to sleep better.
